Even well-made cigars develop burn problems. Construction plays a role, but humidity, lighting technique, and smoking pace matter just as much.
Tunneling
Filler burns faster than wrapper and binder. The cherry retreats into the cigar. Most common cause is over-humidification. Dry-box cigars for 30 to 60 minutes before smoking. To fix: gently blow through the cigar to push heat outward, then hold your lighter along the unburned wrapper edge. Rotate slowly.
Canoeing
One side burns faster than the other. Hold your lighter against the slower side. Let it catch up before puffing. Rotate the slow side to the bottom when you draw since heat rises.
Runners
A thin crack where the burn races ahead. Caused by wrapper veins or inconsistent tension. Dampen the wrapper ahead of the runner with a moistened fingertip to slow the burn.
Relighting a Dead Cigar
Blow through to clear stale smoke. Knock off loose ash, toast the foot fresh. Under 15 minutes out tastes nearly the same. Beyond 30 minutes, expect bitterness.
Prevention
Toast the foot evenly before the first puff. Rotate while toasting. One puff every 45 to 60 seconds. Humidity between 65 and 70 percent gives the best chance of even burning.
